Are You Drinking Enough Water?

How to drink more water is something I battled with for a while. For some reason, I worked really hard to avoid drinking water. All that effort caught up with me when I finally lay down in bed at night and my throat just couldn’t take it anymore. So the dance began… one trip to the kitchen for a glass of water and another to the bathroom; this would go on for what seemed like halfway through the night yet I never learned my lesson. I was just determined not to drink water (subconsciously). This threw off my hormones and I wasn’t getting enough sleep because I would have to interrupt my sleep to drink water and again to go to the bathroom.

After many nights of making multiple trips to the kitchen and to the bathroom, I finally had enough! Something needed to change so I made a conscious effort to drink more water.

Changing my water-drinking habits has enabled me to enjoy my sleep a whole lot more than I used to. My body also works so much better, I don’t get bloated or constipated. It has been a great change in my life. It took a little bit of learning.

Another thing that has really improved is my skin. It just looks a lot healthier. I look in the mirror and I smile at the person looking right back at me:)

So how do you drink more water?

      1. Drink water first thing in the morning.

If you make this a habit to first thing in the morning, it becomes part of your daily routine. Your subconscious picks it up and makes it a part of your natural habit.

      2. Warm your first glass of water.

I find it really hard to drink cold water in the morning. For some reason, I feel sick when I drink cold water in the morning so I prefer to warm it up a bit.  You don’t need to have it too hot, however, if you prefer, you can always have it hot and you can sip on it. Drinking warm water in the morning is especially easier in the wintertime.

     3. Keep a checklist of how much water you are drinking.

I keep a checklist of how much water I am drinking. I get a piece of paper and I write 1-8 and each time I finish a glass of water, I check it off. This serves multiple purposes:

  • It gives me a sense of accomplishment in the water-drinking department and this keeps me motivated.
  • Keeps track of how much water I am drinking. Drinking too much water causes a salt imbalance in the body. Not drinking enough means the organs in your body don’t function quite as well.
    4. You can drink all your 8 glasses of water needed in the first half of the day.

Drinking all 8 glasses of water in one sitting can prove to be a very very uncomfortable morning or day. Spread it out. You can drink two glasses of water every hour if you want. This means that in about 4 hours, you’re all through with water-drinking. Or you can spread it out. The choice is yours.

    5. Increase your water intake if you’re physically active.

I like to work out a lot. It is not enough to drink just the eight glasses of water when you’re physically active. I try to increase my water intake to about 12 glasses of water per day when I have been very active.

    6. Use a reminder.

Finally, Set an alarm to remind you to drink water. Sometimes, we get so busy that we completely forget to drink water. This one of the awesome ways an alarm can help.

Happy water drinking people!
